In businesses they are often teamed with a Dry Powder and or Water fire extinguisher which provide protection against Class A fires (combustible solids).

Foam Fire Extinguisher
General Description:
Foam fire extinguishers, also termed AFFF, are more versatile than water fire extinguishers. They are also more efficient allowing you to choose a smaller lighter extinguisher for an equivalent fire risk. Foam can be used for Class A fires (wood, paper, textiles, coal etc.) & Class B flammable liquid fires. Foam Extinguishers contain a proportion of water so are not recommended for fires involving live electricity.

Water Fire Extinguisher
General Description:
A Water fire extinguisher is used for Class A fires involving combustible solids, typically wood, paper, plastics, coal and fabrics. They should NOT be used on live electrical or flammable liquid fires. Water fire extinguishers are best teamed with a Dry Powder or Carbon Dioxide extinguisher in the office or workplace to cater for other fire risks. Foam Extinguishers offer an alternative to water and are more efficient allowing a lighter weight extinguisher to be used for a comparable fire risk.

Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher
General Description:
Dry Powder fire extinguishers are the most versatile of all fire extinguishers and can be used on Class A, B & C fires and fires involving electrical equipment. For sensitive electrical equipment such as computers it is advisable to use a CO2 extinguisher which leaves no residue.
